Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens
Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, in 1550 Palazzo Pitti was purchased by the Medici family, who soon chose it as their official residence. Today the palace houses some of the most important museums in Florence including the Palatine Gallery, the Royal Apartments and the Gallery of Modern Art.
The palace overlooks the famous Boboli Garden, a real monumental park best explored on foot.
Via Maggio
This elegant street in the Oltrarno district just a few steps from Palazzo Pitti is home to many art galleries and antique shops. There are also several palaces notable for their striking beauty.
Among these is the Palace of Bianca Cappello, once the home of the lover and later wife of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Francesco I de’ Medici. The Grand Duke wished to build a palace for his beloved and commissioned the work from the famous architect Bernardo Buontalenti, ensuring it was built near his residence in Palazzo Pitti.
